Today, I want to start with a story that's a little... no, actually, a very scary story. The company you commute to every morning with a cup of coffee, the organization that has you counting down the days to payday, might not need you anymore in a few years. No, let me correct myself. It will likely change into a structure that doesn't need most of its employees. Are you thinking this is just some baseless YouTube clickbait? Haha, it's not. This is part of a massive, irreversible change that's already underway, and it's because of the topic we're diving deep into today: the advent of the 'Lightweight Civilization'.
It's a concept proposed by big data expert Song Gil-young. While the term might sound a bit difficult and academic, for non-developers, planners, marketers, designers, and PMs like us, it's a very real and brutal story directly tied to our survival. Imagine an era where a few people, armed with a powerful weapon like an Iron Man suit called AI, can effortlessly handle tasks that used to require hundreds or even thousands of people. This 'Age of Lightweight Civilization' isn't just at our doorstep; it has already opened the door and walked in.
In today's video, I'll break down what this terrifying but essential concept of 'Lightweight Civilization' is, why this tectonic shift is happening right now, and most importantly, what on earth we need to do to survive this massive wave without being swept away, all from my practical perspective as a 6-year AI startup PM who started as a designer. You know the drill on my channel: I'm working a full-time job, so there's no fancy editing, just raw information and hard-hitting insights. There are no flashy captions or effects, but I've packed it with only the essential takeaways to save your precious time. So even if it's a bit long today, please stay focused until the end. This one video might just make you completely rethink your future career path.
Alright, first, let's properly define what 'Lightweight Civilization' even means. The term literally means a 'civilization that is light in weight.' To understand it, it's easier to think of its opposite. Yes, that would be the 'Heavyweight Civilization'. The world we've lived in until now, the civilization humanity has built over the 200 years since the Industrial Revolution, is the Heavyweight Civilization. Massive factories, tens of thousands of employees, huge capital investments, and the complex bureaucracy and pyramid organizations to manage it all. Everything was geared towards a single goal: economies of scale. For example, building a single car factory costs trillions of won and requires thousands, even tens of thousands, of workers, right? Digging the ground, raising buildings, setting up production lines, hiring and training people... this is the classic symbol of a Heavyweight Civilization. It's heavy, massive, and changing direction requires enormous time and cost. It's like a giant oil tanker that needs to start preparing kilometers ahead just to make a turn. Inefficiency and slow speed were the destiny of this colossal scale.
But the Lightweight Civilization is the complete opposite of all this. You could say it's like a jet ski zipping past that oil tanker. You know the messaging app Telegram, right? The one many people use for its security. Do you know how many employees run this massive service used by hundreds of millions worldwide? Don't be shocked—it's just 30 people. Midjourney, which stunned the world with its AI image generation, has 40. There's even a company called Base44, run by a single person, that's valued in the trillions of won. Does that even make sense? Haha, this is the reality of the Lightweight Civilization. It's about a small number of people using AI technology as a lever to accomplish tremendous feats that were unimaginable in the past. It’s like one person wearing an Iron Man suit and taking on an entire division or army. In this analogy, the Iron Man suit is AI.
Ultimately, the core values of the Lightweight Civilization are just two things: 'extreme efficiency' and 'insane speed'. While the massive corporations of the Heavyweight Civilization hold countless meetings, revise reports dozens of times, and line up for executive approval just to decide whether to start a project, a lightweight organization just executes. When an idea comes up, they create a prototype in a few hours, check the market response, and immediately revise. It's because there's virtually no decision-making process. The fact that organizations and individuals with this overwhelming speed are emerging as competitors in the market—this is the core of the change we are facing.
So, why is this change hitting us like a tsunami right now? Why not 10 years ago? You probably have a vague idea of the answer. The explosive emergence of 'Generative AI' was the catalyst. Song Gil-young calls November 30, 2022, the day ChatGPT was first released to the public, 'The Day.' He argues it's a civilizational singularity, a point where human history can be divided into before and after.
Why is this so significant? Because for the first time in human history, the 'commoditization of intelligence' has begun. Previously, specific knowledge or skills—like coding ability, design sense, or legal knowledge—were the exclusive domain of a few experts. They were things you could only obtain through immense time and effort. But now, thanks to AI, anyone—truly anyone—can whip up professional-level results in an instant. They say the average IQ of AI services was under 100 last year, but this year it's approaching 140. In just one year. For reference, the average human IQ is 100. Haha. We now have a colleague who is much smarter than us, doesn't sleep, doesn't complain about their salary, and works 24/7/365 without getting tired. They don't even form a union. From a company's perspective, isn't it obvious they would use it?
What's even scarier is the explosive growth of 'Prosumer' services in the market, which allow individuals to use this powerful AI for a monthly fee of just $20, or a few tens of thousands of won. The paid version of ChatGPT you're using, Midjourney, the numerous coding assistance tools—they all fall into this category. People started paying 30,000 won for these tools and actually began making 300,000 won, 3 million won, or even 30 million won. For example, a talented designer can now subscribe to a few AI image generation and video editing tools and single-handedly do the work that a small advertising agency used to do. That era is here. A single developer, using an AI coding assistant, can finish a project in two days that would have taken a team of five a week to complete in the past.
As things stand, a structure is forming where individuals and companies compete directly. A design agency with dozens of employees, paying rent and social insurance, has to compete with a single freelance designer working from home. It's an absurd situation. In terms of fixed costs and speed, is it even a fair game? So, companies too, in order to survive, are tightening their belts and starting to trim the fat. They're struggling to make their organizations as lightweight as possible. They have begun a painful diet towards 'lightweight-ification'. This is the essence of what is happening right now, at this very moment, in every industry around the world.
Now, for the most important part. This might be uncomfortable to hear, but it's a reality we must face head-on. So, how exactly will this massive vortex of change affect your company life and career? This is by no means a story about the distant future; it's our story, right now.
